https://youtube/watch?v=b1XGPvbWn0A&feature=youtu.be People wonder how to get a date without approaching women they see on the street, especially given the rise in awareness of street harassment. I think primarily this is about reading social cues, and how many mens actions completely ignore the social cues of women they encounter. For example, if a woman is sitting on the bus leaning towards the isle, not reading a book, without headphones in, and is generally making eye contact and smiling when she sees people, this person is clearly alright to approach and speak to. A woman with her head in a book and headphones on, not looking at or responding to anyone around her, clearly does not want to be approached or spoken to. This includes walking down the street. Walking at a slower pace, smiling at people, making eye contact- these are all social cues that the individual wants to be approached. Walking at a quicker pace, not making eye contact/ looking down, headphones on, texting- all clear social cues that that person doesnt want to be approached. One would think that these simple social cues are enough to notify anyone paying any attention if that person wants to be approached or not. However, many women (myself included) who are clearly displaying signs that they do not want to be approached by anyone (by walking quickly, listening to headphones, reading a book- not being ambiguous AT ALL), are often approached by others with either appropriate or inappropriate comments, that often persist despite not responding to the approach or comments. It isnt about women being more uptight, its about women demanding that our basic body language be seen and respected before our personal sphere being invaded by words or otherwise. No one can deny the fact that men often invade the personal sphere of women exhibiting clear body language that they do not want to be approached with words and physical harassment at an unreasonable level.
