https://youtube/watch?v=wZEGijN_8R0 The problem: 26+17. The answer: 43. How did I arrive at that answer, you ask. I will tell you. I wrote 26 and below it I wrote the number 17 and underlined the 17. I then added the upper 6 to the lower 7 and came up with 13. The 3 was positioned below the 7and I carried the 1 to the top, above the 2. I then added the 1 with the 2 with the 1, all going downward and placed the 4 to the left of the 3. Answer: 43. Now lets do it COMMON CORE style: 26+17. Separate the 17 into 2 separate numbers. In this case 4 and 13 and place these numbers below the 17. Now take the original first number 26, and place it below the 4 and the 13. Now bring down the first part of the separated number (4) and place it next to the original number placed below, resulting in 26+4. Add these two numbers together to get a total of 30. Now take the 30 and place it on yet another line as such, 30. Now bring down the other number of your separated 17, which is 13, resulting in 30+13. Add these together and you will come up with the correct answer of 43. The Old Mat way took one equation, but the Common Core method required the following steps. 1.) The original problem. 2.) Separation of the second number of that problem. 3.) Adding the original first number with a portion of the separated problem. 4.) Adding this answer to the other portion of the original second number, now the separated number. 5.) Answer achieved. * Also, If 43 was not your sum in Old Math, you were incorrect. Whereas if you showed a different answer with Common Core such as 42 or 44, you may still be considered correct if you at least showed your work. The dumbing down of America is truly amazing.
