i John, I am an Icarus Interstellar member, and I have a good grip on what Icarus is about, so I can discuss with you about your interests and see if Icarus is the right forum for them. Just send me a note or a friend request. John Bassist 7/29, 8:52pm John Bassist hi https://facebook/ThinkStarship?ref_type=bookmark https://facebook/ThinkStarship/photos_stream i have dozens of designs for realistic next generation space ships im looking for people that want to be involved in that in open source design. Today Hi John, Icarus is all about starship design, and nothing else. So we need to leave our political ideas at the door, since although politics are fun they are also a great time waster, ans as everyone is doing the work i their spare time, there is little time left to waste. Actually, its kind of relaxing, concentrating on the numbers and the technical arguments. Icarus information is open to all, but the designs can be partly or completely proprietary, it depends on the teams. You might be interested in another, more Star Trek related site, Build The Enterprise. I spent a few years there, before changing for Icarus. Its a really good idea, Build The Enterprise, but the idea has a bit run its course without any real funding, its spinning its wheels a bit. Most of the math is at the same level as the plumbing design series. The only team with more involved math is the one working on warp drive. These people are all practicing physicists, so there is not much somebody with limited math skills such as me can do to help. They also are working with professional artists, so there again there is little need for further input. The most open teams are the ones dealing with design of Interstellar probes that dont use exotic drives, slow ships and generation ships. There are two groups working on generation ships and arcologies, but they already have full teams. Any ideas on new projects from your side? Today John Bassist 5:59pm John Bassist ?? well seriously, i doubt your whole teams are as far advanced along as i am. it sounds like you have teams with everything covered, but then i go reading and looking at junk. it seems to me that im perpetually stuck on this front. i know how to make the future real, but i cant find any competent allies. you dlnt really make it sound promising , i pretty much end at the place i was six months ago, which is humans are too self absorbed and ego driven and stuck to bother to listen to me, id be wasting my time to try to interact with them. John Bassist 6:00pm John Bassist that buld the enterprise thing similar deal. i am pretty sure i contacted them, and they never replied. their version of a realistci enterprise is pathetic... i dont mean to be rude but its hard to believe they can take themselves seriously. i could fix it for them, but experience has demonstrated over and over and over and over that humans would rather cling to their ego than actually get help. John Bassist 6:50pm John Bassist there is little need for further input. honestly i never understand how people operate. why dont you guys post what you have, and i can laugh at it and explain how to improve it, or why you should junk those ideas and start over. Hi John, you can follow the links in the pages of the web site. Its more practical than facebook, really. John Bassist 7:22pm John Bassist which website? icarusinterstellar.org/ Icarus Interstellar | A nonprofit foundation dedicated to achieving interstellar flight by 2100. icarusinterstellar.org [logo for Project Astrolabe by J. N. Nielsen] Project Astrolabe: Navigating the Future of Civilization J. N. Nielsen Introducing Project Astrolabe Icarus Interstellar will be adding Project Astrolabe to its programs, which will be concerned with the core issues of civilization’s evolution, longevity… John Bassist 7:22pm John Bassist i have already had one encounter this morning with somebody who cant even answer the question of what kind of drive system hes planning to use. what can I say? Too bad.... John Bassist 7:23pm John Bassist So i have seen this website before. whats not stated again is what kind ofdrive system is intended. they are working on at least four: fusion, light sail, pellet drive and warp John Bassist 7:24pm John Bassist if you are going to use a ramrocket system, awesome. if its going to be a magnetic field distortion, drive, awesome. if its going to be a nuclear powered rocket.. or etc.. not so awesome. how am i supposed to even figure out what drive system is intended? how can i even begin to address anything when there are no details to find..? you scroll sideways through the various projets on the bar near the top. its not obvious, i know or you look up research, publications in the title bar John Bassist 7:26pm John Bassist okay, so i am reading icarus project here.. pellet fusion John Bassist 7:27pm John Bassist and still no mention of drive system, just the power system. okay, ..so is that intended also as the drive? pellet fusion is a power system in my book... if its a drive system then you have to explain how the pellet is accelerated, and then burned, and how that is transofmred into thrust. inertial confinement fusion or z-pinch fusion. Its a traditional drive, because Icarus refers directly to project Daedalus. John Bassist 7:30pm John Bassist okay, finally getting as close as almost pinning down the drive system. the pellet is exploded through pressure, induced by lazers or magnetic fields. It burn up, with an efficiency anywhere between 10 and 80%, depending on the physicist. The explosion products are ions, neutrons and x-rays. The ions are accelerated by a magnetic nozzle, the neutrons and x-rays are wasted John Bassist 7:30pm John Bassist without more details its hard to be meaninful in exactness, but thats going to be a very low delta v and thus an awefully long trip compared to a ram rocket. youre right, it not very good compared to ram. Most of the people in the group gave up on ram a few years ago, when some it was calculated that it had more drag than thrust. these are faily easy papers to locate on the web John Bassist 7:33pm John Bassist how many pellets per second? theres another issue. if you dont keep them coming in sequence, its a very bumpy ride, with pulses of jarring thrust. yet, doing that (100+ pellets per second) you are going to run outta pellets fast. honestly i cant see this as any thing other than dumble down. papers about why ram probably doesnt work. There is also the problem that the density of stuff in space is lower than Forward expected John Bassist 7:34pm John Bassist papers about why ram does not work... thats convenient to keep the average joe in the stone age... about 140 pellets per second, depending on the size of the ship, of course. The ship has almost 100 to 1 mass ratio, i.e it
