i heard a politician on the radio this morn saying that the transition from priimary school to high school is traumatic for all children, and even more traumatic if aides are taken away from children with disabilities at this point in their schooling. Putting aside the latter I think the first statement is ridiculous. Having Ebola or AIDS or a tsunami destroying your home is traumatic. Going from Primary school to high school is a normal transition in Australia, and an opportunity not available to children everywhere. If we portray it as a scary thing are we not creating unnecessary fear in our 11 year olds? I had a bit of apprehension going from state school to high school as I was going to be back in class with children who had bullied me at Catholic primary school (causing the shift to state school in grade 4), but the prospect of learning new things, a whole new library to explore, and new friends far outweighed the negatives. Lets emphasize the positive and the challenges to help produce resilient children rather than trying to protect them from anything difficult.
