i just visited the Forest Service comment page about the so called permitting issue for photographers... and left this in their IN box. if only they read their mail! Given that fact that no one at the Forest Service would even have a job today if the beauty and riches of the federal land hadnt been photographed and shared by the hundreds of great photographers who have been drawn to the natural beauty, it seems rather overly intrusive for the Service to now demand that a photographer walking in the shadows of Ansel Adams and Dr. Eliot Porter must now have a permit to do their own work. Yes it is work, to carry a camera and tripod into the wilderness. Its fun, but its also work, and reflects a dedication that todays photographers have for the same kind of joy and wonderment that the wilderness exudes. Given that the lands are held in trust for the public, please note that we photographers are part of that public. I think no one questions a feature movie crew, or large commercial shoot needing some permitting when you have many people and vehicles, but the mere supposition that a single photographer needs to be controlled by such permitting shows an essential misunderstanding of what we do. I hope that the outcry from the public in general and the photographic community in particular is heard in the Forest Service offices. Whatever you perceive the problem to be, and Im not quite sure what that is.... we are NOT the problem. Thanks for your consideration. One other thing -- do not consider your job a failure if you neglect to enact silly rules or absurd regulations.
