i posted this earlier, but the text that accompanied my post wasnt showing, so im doing it again. folks, please watch AND share this. i know that its really tough for many because a lot of folks in this country are not used to seeing murders like this, but it is necessary. dont hide from the truth. if you fear having a visceral reaction to it, dont. it is completely normal and shows that you are human. sharing this is not diluting this mans death. raising awareness is the least you can do, and reading an article filled with polysyllables just isnt the same as seeing for yourself. even the greatest of articles or speeches by celebrities wont ever come close to seeing something raw (or close to it). ive heard some self-righteous journalists and other folks say that they this video shouldnt be making its rounds, that they dont even want to watch it themselves. how someone can feel entitled to publish their opinions and analysis about something they wont even dare to watch (like this) is honestly beyond me. where im from, violent death is an everyday occurrence. you cant shy away from it. you have to face it because it is reality. a vast majority of people cant afford the luxury of being so sheltered that they dont have to. here, many have that luxury. i ask that you please put it aside for a moment, even if this video will clash with all your food pics and cat memes, and even if you know that some jerk you know will likely try to justify this cold-blooded killing of yet another black man at the hands of police. this is a reality in the united states of amerikkka, so if you have even the slightest bit of compassion, dont ignore it. otherwise, you are being complicit, particularly when even mainstream media are giving this coverage (not the right kind though). and for those of you who are quick to raise the point about how it would suck to have a video documenting the murder of a loved one go viral, i get it. when i filmed kayvan sabehgi getting beat by oakland police during occupy oakland almost three years ago, i made sure to reach out to the family before releasing it because i had similar feelings, could see that perspective. but once it i met with them, it was clear what would suck even more: no justice. i was also reminded of all the times ive been at the hands of police brutality charged by racism. i can only wish that someone were there to document those incidents, and that they would help me receive justice as well. we knew that mainstream media would sensationalize the footage, but at the end of the day, unfortunately, if shit like this doesnt get out, it is less likely that there will be justice. because what matters is not only what happens in our holy judicial system, but also public support, and helping change shit, one inch at a time, one mind at a time, one heart at time. RIP Kajieme Powell. and to those of you who will take the time to read this, watch this, and share this, thank you in advance.
