i2i campaign kicks off THE MINISTRY of Planning and Sustainable Development has launched its campaign for i2i: Idea to Innovation 2013. i2i is organised by the Ministry though its Council for Competitiveness and Innovation and the purpose of the program is to start the process of building and promoting the importance of innovation on a national level, which in turn will result in improved competitiveness. i2i 2012 gives an opportunity to innovators and inventors to submit proposals for innovative and creative ideas and if selected, they would receive grants of between $75,000 to $200,000 to take their idea to proof of concept in one year or less. In order to qualify for these grants projects were required to meet the criteria of the invention of a new product or service; the improvement of a new product or service; the introduction of a new process of adding value to a Trinidad and Tobago-sourced raw material; the products, services or processes should be able to find a market or use in local or export market; or the project impact would drive social benefit and creation of sustainable, high quality jobs- targeting critical areas of national recovery in the renewable energy, health & wellness, food security or creative industries. Last year, at its initial launch, there were 400 applicants over the eight week period, from which 50 winners were chosen. Of these awardees ten grants went to companies, 17 to project teams and 23 to individuals. Line Minister, Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie at the launch of the i2i project earlier this month said innovation was a necessity for greater economic and social inclusiveness and the lasting prosperity of a country and its citizens.
