... in 1985, I needed an assistant for our growing vehicle leasing company. I needed someone to keep the office running, handle auto title work, some light book-keeping, etc. I advertised the position at $1500 per month salary, together with fully paid health insurance, and a 401-K. That was over twice the minimum wage, and about 30% more than customary. Altruistic ... no ... out of deep-seated political belief ... no, again ... except there is a certain satisfaction that comes from being perceived as more than miserly. What happened is that we were over-run with applicants, whom we quickly filtered, and hired a perfect fit ... the young lady grew in the job for over 10 years .... ... just a hunch ... companies like Costco operate with a similar strategy .....
