jensongs.net Dad continues with his introduction of The Singing Jensens, Wed like to sing a song requested by our baritone Hey thats me, I thought to myself...Dixie As we started singing this song it would always remind me where I heard this song and fell in love with its ballad style arrangement, because my first musical Heros were The Impostors my Dads former Quartet, International medalists, who did a beautiful job singing this song. I...wish I was in the land of cotton ....They even sang Dixie on a record of all the winners, about 3 years earlier, as they used to rehearse in our recreation room/basement twice a week. For years I would hears this Awsome barbershop harmony in my dreams while I slept. As were singing, those big cameras on wheels are getting closer to each of us, and another camera also rolls towards a slight left angle facing me as the other one is closer to my sister, on my dads right side. As we sing the quietest part of the song To Live And Die.......In Dixie you can hear a pin drop. Away....Away...As we are winding up this song, the very exciting Tag Waaay Dowwwn South A tremendous applause, for my young ears, coming from these moms and Dads, and their kids. I felt very proud. I can even see Sandy the clown, clapping too. For our last number today, wede like to sing a song that The Buffalo Bills, stole from us about, ...ten years ago, audience laughs, Bye Bye Blackbird My younger sibling who has perfect pitch at 8 years old belts out his pick up note, even before dad blows the pitch pipe. Yep, perfect pitch, who needs a pitch pipe I thought. Pack up all my cares and Woh, here I go singing low, Bye, bye Blackbird.....Since we recorded this song on our 1963 record, dad had updated this song with what is called bell chords. A bell chord is where you have the four notes that make the chord, sung in consecutive order. Maybe the lead will sing the first note, then the tenor, baritone and bass, and the first three will hold onto their notes till the forth note comes in. This can be done with any order but, the singers have to know exactly whos to come in when. A somewhat difficult or confusing type of singing which calls for very synchronized execution. Dad taught us well with these bell chords and we loved to do it because it was impressive and seemed to always bring smiles to peoples ears. Ok here comes our Tag, Blackbird,.... Bye Bye. We wave goodbye to the audience, audience starts to clap, and we usually walk off stage at this point, but dad whispers during the applause to Stay right where we are, and keep waving. The two WGN cameras are now slowly rolling backwards while still aiming at us, and then the red lights on each camera facing us goes out. The Bozo show has just gone for commercials. Dad says Great job kids, you always make me proud Over comes the man with the clip board again, says wow that was fantastic kids we all say thank you , As clipboard man talks to Dad for a few seconds, Mom rushes over sounded really good kids, come this way we have to go backstage again they need to clear this area for their next show segment We follow her as someone pulls the curtain back for Mom and us kids to walk through. I notice my older sister always seems to walk ahead of us. Into the hall we wait for a few minutes until Dad comes through. With a big warm smile on Dads face, he asks How do feel kids? You did great! The baby, my youngest sibling says somewhat oblivious to the fact we just sang on TV, say Im hungry, me too, I said , my sister said, that was neat Dad, The show is almost over for the day, so well go to the cafeteria in the studio for lunch in a few minutes says Dad. Im now starting to see a little more hustle and bustle in the hallway as its getting closer to lunch time and the end of the show, since theres a lot more people starting to walk through the hallway, so maybe 15 minutes has now past since we waved Bye Bye, Mom and I walked into our dressing room we shared with Ray Rayner, as mom looks through her purse or some bag, Im not really paying much attention as Im looking into the hall, Im seeing more and more people walk by the dressing room. In walks Ray Rayner as Oliver O. Oliver, and says Beautiful Job we say thank you, Im a little nervous talking to Ray, because hes a star in my mind seeing him on TV every day. As Ray hangs his multi colored Oliver coat up, he dashes out into the hallway, then in comes Dad with my other siblings, and asks Mom, are you guys ready to go to the cafeteria and eat? Mom mumbles yeah as shes still digging in her purse, for something. Okay lets go mom says proudly as if she finally found what she was digging for. While Dad starts to lead the way into the crowding hallway, my two sibling right behind him, Mom and then me, on my right side I feel a gentle bumping or nudge, as Sandy the mute Clown that never talked on the show, looks at me and says, Great job you guys, looks up at Dad and Mom and says loudly Thank you Ed, and Carol the hallway was getting noisy, it was delightful. Ive got a table set up for The Singing Jensens, which is actually my table, right this way Jensens as Sandy now leads the rest of the way for all of us. Now Im kind of shocked because I didnt know Sandy the Clown the deaf mute Clown could actually talk, and the Producer of the show too. Sandy claims that hes buying our lunch. Wow I thought to myself, I cant wait to tell people that Sandy the Clown bought our lunch when I get back to school today.
