kingsofthesunband I found this footage that Jeff took during our last recording of the album Standback, Prepare To Be Amazed . In watching this footage, I now know why drummers burn out, Bonham, Moon, Krupa, & some just quit or die at the top of their game. Walden, Mouzon, even Ian Paice pulled things right back. Truth is, you cant keep up the pressure, demanded by this instrument, mentally or physically. If you can manage to keep it up, can you keep up the desire to burn that bright ? So here I am, never wanting to release this footage because it represents so much struggle ! At the time, I was recovering from accidentally putting a screwdriver through my left hand, killing the nerves & dislocating my thumb, OUCH........... I prayed to God that if I got the use of my hand back, I would never take my gift for granted again. So here it is, a tribute of 35 years of my drumming. Come on my journey of self discovery from the African rhythms of the deep Congo to the rudimental Highlands of Scotland, the raging Latin beats of the Amazon then across to the golden age of jazz in New York City. First off, a big warm hug to all my special friends, thanking you for tuning in and helping me celebrate my crazy life as THE GREATEST UNKNOWN DRUMMER Clifford Hoad - originally started THE YOUNG LIONS in 1981 with his brother Jeff and Bob Spencer (ex Finch & Skyhooks). This band went on to become The Kings Of The Sun which became one of the most talked about, and loved, hard rock acts Australia has ever produced internationally.The band signed to Mushroom Records with their first release Bottom Of My Heart which enjoyed chart success, music clip and an appearance on countdown in 1986. On the strength of their exciting live act, KINGS OF THE SUN were signed to RCA Records, New York by Simon Lowe for 4yrs in 1987 making their classic debut 1st LP self titled KINGS OF THE SUN produced by Eddie Kramer (Hendrix,Zeppelin & Kiss). Included were the singles and videos, Serpentine & Black Leather (which was banned on MTV for being too risqué). Strong chart success, a USA tour followed by a European tour with KISS in 1989, strengthened their profile and secured their place amongst the rock and roll heavy weights. Living in Malibu Beach California, the Hoad brothers Cliff and Jeff set out to write their 2nd L.P in 1990, FULL FRONTAL ATTACK. 2nd L.P, Cliff says is their finest!, boasted 2 singles. 1st Drop the Gun , a rock n roll classic. Held position in the charts for 6 weeks teetoring on the edge as RCA Records closed their doors in a corporate take over by BMG Records. 2nd single LOCK ME UP . Bad timing still didnt dim their blazing light as US and Australian tours followed. Strong enough to be granted a 3rd LP from BMG Records, New York. RESURRECTION, their 3rd L.P their final statement. An excellent and now hard to find CD was never released in the USA. They returned to Australia in late 1993 and released a single and video ROAD TO NOWHERE and a 2nd single TRAPPED INSIDE YOUR HEART. Australian tour with Jimmy Barnes in 1996. Cliff and Jeff recorded 4th LP unreleased ! . Toured with Sammy Hagar in Australia, in 2000, for the KINGS final hurrah. Exhaustion and recovering from a near fatal car accident in 1999 caused Cliff a long needed lay off until 2002. Enter THE RICH AND FAMOUS band, collaborating with brother Jeffrey Hoad, they produced 3 cds, all great, and uplifting, rock n roll contributions, adding to their already full bag of tricks and musical history. Cliffs interests are drumming, Snare Drum building called Vibration Society, kit restorations, and teaching via his very own brand of self discovery techniques, and occasionally playing his tenor sax.
