livingwaters The Palmist said, “For I will declare my iniquity; I will be in anguish over my sin” (Psalm 38:18). This is against everything the world teaches. It is against self-esteem and self-confidence. It reeks of guilt and self-abasement. Yet it’s the way of eternal salvation. Contrition (sorrow for sin) must be present for repentance to be genuine. The Bible speaks of godly sorrow working repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10). In addressing sinners, the Scriptures say, “Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness.” Those who laugh now about the seriousness of sin, will eventually mourn about the seriousness of its repercussion. We may not shed physical tears over our sins, but we can show the genuineness of our sorrow by trusting alone in Jesus and living a life free of hypocrisy. Such a godly life brings with it freedom from guilt, and a joy that is unspeakable in the knowledge that our sins are forgiven and that death no longer has a sting.
