london | somerset house | first contemporary african art fair | opening today | 16/10/2013 > 20/10/2013 54 countries on the continent, 1:54 will showcase the highest quality African art, bringing together a host of leading organisations from the African art scene around the world with more than 15 carefully selected galleries representing over 70 artists to create the most significant cross sectional insight into art from the continent ever seen. Coinciding with Frieze Week, the new fair builds on the burgeoning popularity of contemporary African art and presents a rare opportunity to explore the rapidly emerging African art market and acquire works in an environment supported by some of the most influential people and organisations in the art world. From painting to sculpture and photography the fair presents visual African art in its many forms giving collectors, art enthusiasts and culture seekers the chance to be the first to experience and engage with African art on this level. The fair will be designed by RIBA award-winning architect David Adjaye and will feature works of art by rapidly emerging and established artists such as; Meschac Gaba, whose work has recently been bought by the Tate; Venice Biennale Golden-Lion-winner Edson Chagas; Aboudia, whose work has been bought by the Saatchi Gallery; Sammy Baloji whose work has been exhibited at the Tate or Sokari Douglas Camp who is attracting a lot of attention in the international art market. Through an extensive programme of conversations, talks, panels and keynote speeches with some of the art worlds key thinkers 1:54 also promotes discussions and understanding of contemporary African art focussing on topics including markets & economies, collections, artistic practice, criticism and Africa as an inspirational ground. 1:54 is initiated by market developer Touria El Glaoui under the auspice of Art Africa Ltd. Designed by David Adjaye, 1:54 will be held at Somerset House, a historic building and major cultural arts centre in the heart of London.
