making people aware about their environment is of immense importance.Education has an important role to play in the over all development of people of J&K.Although, Kashmiri Pandits in the past had been giving high priority to the education of their children ,yet it was restricted mostly to learning of Sanskrit, sharda ,Hindi, urdu and Persian languages before onset of twentieth century.Womenfolk were lagging behind their counterparts in modern education. With the onset of twentieth century the importance of modern scientific education and along with it knowledge of English language became evident to everyone. In the land locked Kashmir valley there were almost no facilities available for modern higher education particularly for women.Yet Shrimati Kamla Zadoo daughter of Sh.Vasu Dev Zadoo passed her Matriculation examination of Punjab University in1936 and graduated from Shri Pratap College Srinagar in 1940,where she studied with boys. She was the first woman graduate of the Kashmiri Pandit Community and one of the pioneers in the field of womens education in J&K.Subsequently she did her BEd from Prince of Wales College Jammu and joined formerly Christian College of Punjab University. After marriage ,named as Kamla Shankar, she added masters degree in History to her qualification from Pune University.was associated with Institute of Linguistics Hyderabad and taught English literature at famous Loyola School Pune. She was a brave patriot also and during Tribal invasion of 1947 she joined the Womens Militia and took arms for defence of Kashmir. In recognition of her pioneering accomplishment she was conferred with Dr. Anne Besant Award 2011.She unfortunately left for her heavenly abode in 2012.Photo of Shrimati Kamla Zadoo(Kamla Shankar) Winner of Dr.Anee Besent Award with her sister Shmt.Krishna Zadoo (Misri) retired Principal Govt.
