medabad: While the entire city will be celebrating Diwali with great pomp and enthusiasm, the Sikh community in the city has planned a shraddhanjali ceremony on November 2. They plan to offer special prayers in the city on Saturday, to mourn the thousands of lives lost in the Sikh genocide in November, 1984. Around 200 Sikhs are expected to participate in this event, which will be held near Nehru bridge on Ashram Road. The participants will also display posters and banners by the Sikhs demanding quick justice for the victims’ families. Speaking to dna, one of the trustees of Kalgidhar Sevak Jatha, Satnam Singh Dang said, “More than 10,000 Sikhs were brutally killed during the genocide in November of 1984. Thousands of families are awaiting justice even now – 30 years after the horrifying incident.” He also said that the genocide was a result of political motivations during the Congress rule and despite evidence against the key accused, no action has been taken until date. Dang further said that the Sikh community has always come forward to help the country in times of crisis. Elaborating on the event, Manmeet Singh Chhabra, who is one of the members of Jatha, said, “Similar events will be held from November 1-3 in Vadodara, Surat, Mumbai, Delhi and all other cities of India where Sikhs reside in large numbers.” In June this year, Sikhs had held a protest rally at Gurudwara Gobind Dham on SG highway under the leadership of activist Jarnail Singh, who had thrown a shoe at finance minister P Chidambaram during a press conference in the past. “When the accused of the 2002 Gujarat riots like Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi have been sent to jail, then why can we not get justice for the Anti- Sikh riot victims? The key accused, Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, should be punished and their acquittal should be challenged in court,” said Chhabra. DNAINDIA****
