mpcourier/article/20150110/DCO/150119871 Brown has 51 saves in 5-0 loss to Larries By JOHN GOKEY MALONE - The Franklin Academy Huskies hosted the Northern Athletic Conference Division II-leading St. Lawrence Central Larries on Friday and found out just why the Larries are at the top of the D-II standings. SLC used its speed and sniper-like shooting to defeat the Huskies 5-0 in a thrilling, up-and-down-the-ice contest, which featured several breakaway rushes and stellar goaltending by both keepers. The Larries, who entered the game ranked eighth in the state in Division II, scored the lone goal of the opening period and, as it turned out, it was the only marker the boys from Brasher would need en route to the team’s 10th overall win of the season. Jake Sutton’s shot from the point was tipped over the shoulder of Malone goalie Joey Brown by Nick Kowalchuck for the eventual game winner at seven minutes and eight seconds of the opening stanza. SLC, now 5-1 in divisional play, scored two goals in the second and capped off the road victory with two more tallies in the third. Lucas Arquiett and Hayden St. Hilaire accounted for the final four St. Lawrence goals, two apiece, as Drew Rose and Nate Stickney had two assists each over the final two periods. “That is the best skating team I’ve seen in the league,” said Malone coach Kevin St. Hilaire of the Larries. “With that said, we still made a lot of mistakes and we (the coaches) expect better than that from our players.” Maybe so, coach, but it was the stellar play of FA goalie Joey Brown that kept the Huskies in the game, a statement with which the coach concurred. “Joey was outstanding again. He kept us in the game and we were fortunate that he was as sharp as he was to limit them to just five goals,” continued St. Hilaire. Brown finished the contest with an astronomical 51 saves, while his counterpart, Nate Burnett, stopped all 12 Franklin Academy shots on goal for the victory. Burnett kept the Huskies off the scoreboard with a three phenomenal glove saves, robbing FA’s Johan Eksing in the first period, then snatching the puck out of the air on scoring attempts from Kyler Head and Bailey Conklin. The shot by Eksing from the high slot was past the SLC keeper when Burnett snared it before it had a chance to go across the red line. Meanwhile, the Larries sped past the Huskies time and time again and peppered Brown with 56 total shots on goal, and had several attempts go high and wide. FA’s sophomore goalie was well up to the challenge despite the Larries scoring five times. Brown thwarted the SLC snipers time and time again, frustrating the St. Lawrence players enough to have them slap their stick against the boards in disgust, or skate around the back of the net with their hands held up in the air in disbelief. St. Lawrence added the first of its four insurance goals early in the second period while having the man advantage. Arquiett put home the second SLC marker at 10:32 of the second period with Rose and Kody Kocsis earning assists. Then Hayden St. Hilaire salted away the win with the third Larries’ tally with just 1:15 left in the middle stanza on passes from Arquiett and Mark Crump. St. Hilaire scored SLC’s fourth goal just 15 seconds into the third period, as Arquiett capped the offensive output with 5:04 left in the game. “We need to pick up the pieces and get ready for another tough matchup on Monday,” added the FA coach, whose charges will host the OFA Blue Devils in a Division II matchup scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Malone Civic Center. “We need every point we can get to stay as close to the top of the standings as we can. OFA is another good-skating team and we have to be at our best each time we take the ice.” Called off Salmon River’s two-day journey to the Rochester area has been called off. The Shamrocks were scheduled to take part in the McQuaid Jesuit Hockey Tournament on Friday and Saturday, but the event has been cancelled due to the inclement weather. SRC has revamped its schedule and will now skate against Potsdam at 12:30 p.m. today at the Massena Tournament. SLC 5, FA 0 St. Lawrence 1 2 2 – 5 Franklin Academy 0 0 0 –0 1st Period 1.
