my Mom has sparked something in me, were talking about Grampa Ts wanderlust in the woods. I have to wonder if its my heritage that makes me so comfortable in the woods. lets see how many trails I can take us down with this thread. I have to start as a youngster, being the youngest and a tag along, I had to keep up with my big brothers and sister a lot. theyd take me along to the railroad bed that runs parallel more or less to Pine Hill Road on the west side of the street. its old as time it seems, Ive never seen evidence of there ever being a railroad there. I dont know as if there ever was. but the trail was a mostly straight run that had the usual dips and roots and occasional branches in the way. surrounded by trees whether in winter or summer, spring or fall you were just in the woods. it seems I spent more time on this particular trail than any other Ive used. its got more than one entrance, one behind a neighbors house was a favorite and if I didnt want to walk through their driveway, I could walk a property line and get to the woods edge and walk along it to the corner of their back field. another was down on Ridlon Road below the first house that was on the left, happening to belong to my parents good friends and the kids our friends as well. there are more im sure, but those are the ones I used most. Ive walked that trail, bicycled that trail, used a motorcycle that I had for a summer on that trail, it was on/off road Honda 350 and so cool. I have been there with lots of people, a few people, only one other person, I got my first kiss there! :D theres a happy moment for any 13 year old girl :) . I rode horse there when I had one for a couple years, much to my Mom and Dads amazement, I had on the spur of the moment bought her and had no where to keep her, thanks the Mitchells family for the impromptu stall. that was quite a year well cover another time. then theres Vaughn Woods, in South Berwick, I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to hike. I did and theres a full album of the photos im fairly sure in my collection. its a historical park and if you bring some money a tour is available in the Historical house and I think they have a gift shop too. wear good shoes n bug juice. I took Mom and Janet before I left Maine. we didnt stick to the trail which got hard on Mum, but Ive ever been comfortable in woods for whatever reason, I just dont seem to get turned around wrong there. I brought us back to the trail and we followed it but I dont need trails. my Granddad bought a house on Hubbard Road when I left Texas to live in Maine. it was January when we purchased it. I had a male friend Tom who moved into it with me and helped shovel 4 feet of snow off the roof, its a ranch style house. we left for lunch and came back to find the neighbor had removed all the snow from the driveway and out from under the eaves of the house where we had been able to step off the roof to get down by just walking down the mountain sized pile of snow wed removed. the whole yard was cleared, hows that for kindness and a warm neighborly welcome? well, I didnt know where the property lines were and Tom and I and the kids all bundled up to go figure out what 6.8 acres might be if we could find any markers. we never did, the snow was deep. there was no trail into the back 40 behind our lot but it didnt stop us. I just kept walking until I found a trail that cut left and right. we walked a long time. I dont know the name of the trail, but its one my kids would know as they got to play on it growing up. it goes out to salmon falls river, but Tom and I and the kids didnt walk that far that day. we did walk a long time though. eventually it started snowing a little as it often does in January in Maine. little soft flakes drifting down in a wide spread and the day had grown dim indeed, afternoon was coming on. Tom pointed it out and asked if we shouldnt head back. I said sure, good idea and turned to my left and at an angle from the path and stepped off the trail. Tom stopped me immediately, Hey wait! arent we going to follow our trail back? he looked worried and I just giggled a him, well we COULD, but itd take longer, the house is that way! and I pointed into the woods about SE direction I guess, I really couldnt say. it was back the way of the trail and to the right angled, thats all, its where the house ought to be. he let it go and followed me with the kids following too. snowy bushes all over the place, no path in front of me. I was content and happy, we came out about 50 feet from the house and had no cause to back track as it was still to the left a bit more. we went in and life resumed, and as I see this ones long, thats enough trails for now. :D I hope youve enjoyed. :D I did.
