my dad passed away back in April, about a month before he died I showed him a metal detector my wife and kids got me for Christmas and told him of some of the places I had been checking out and showed him some artifacts....he said why dont you go to the field at the end of my place on the railroad bed next to Randolphs(Ed and then Clyde) on the rise next to our pond and try it there. I asked him why, I am near 60 years old now and had never heard this before, he said when I bought this place in 1946/7 my dad told me there had been a camp on that rise that the guys that built the railroad into the Ravenscroft mine stayed while they built the railroad. I went ahead and took my new metal detector down there to check things out, and remember, I had never owned one before, imediately I began getting hits and began digging old bent nails and bolts and square nuts that you could tell had been in the ground a longgg time. I even found a flat iron, no handle, it was so huge and heavy and was 12 inches deep. I thought it odd railroad builders would care about pressed clothes, but there it was. I have been back three or four times since and continue to find artifacts all made of iron. This week I found what I assumed might have been the blacksmiths shop because of the large amount of iron and hits I got to the point of getting tired of digging. My question is, do any of you have any information in print about the guys that built the railroad itself? There are lots of stories of the miners, my grandpa being one, but not much about those that built the railroad. I intend to give all my finds to the museum but, I am just curious as to whether there is any written info on these folks.
