my earliest, most vivid recollection of Bill Muncey is of the 1979 San Diego race. Atlas Van Lines went dead in the water on the front straight in front of Fiesta Island. This was well before the concrete barriers that kept the crowds out and away from the waters of Mission Bay on race weekend. As the boat started to drift towards the beach, several folks ambled out into the water about waist deep to keep the boat from coming out up onto the beach. I stood by, within earshot as I watched Steve Reynolds race his rookie butt off in Miss Circus Circus on his way to the win. I can still, vividly hear Bills voice, take it easy fellas, I appreciate your help, but we cant have all of you out in the water....look at that kid there (me), he knows how to enjoy a race.....as many of you know, Bills racing career came to an end in a blowover as he was streaking into the Acapulco sunset on his way to a decisive world championship title....of course, he went out in front - that was Bill....I just cannot believe it has been 32 years since that fateful day. I was out in the street with neighborhood kids playing a pick up game of football. I took a snap and just as I was about to do my finest Dan Fouts impersonation, my father came out of the house (which he rarely did on a Sunday) and broke the news: Bill Muncey died leading a race in Mexico and the sport will never be the same. This came from a man who experienced Black Sunday in 1966 when Rex, Ron and Don perished...but Bills end stuck a chord within him, I guess....and now I understand a little better... https://facebook/pages/Bill-Muncey/126732790703160
