Sx DESPITE being allowed in more than 50 other venues countrywide, the planned ‘Red October’ protest planned for Naval Island on Saturday was denied permission by City authorities.According to organisers, the protest rally was designed to especially remember white farmers and their families murdered in criminal attacks.Dressed symbolically in red, the protesters also planned to submit a petition to senior members at the Richards Bay police station. However, following a Section 4 safety meeting, the public protest was described as ‘high risk’ in terms of traffic and possible public reaction issues.Based on the municipality’s decision, the SAPS also declined to accept the petition. While some 50 protesters did gather briefly at Naval Island on Saturday morning, a decision was taken to move the protest to a private home in Meerensee to avoid conflict with authorities. There the petition was read and balloons were released in remembrance of the killed farmers.‘We must also remember those who survived the horrific attacks and who are left physically and psychologically scarred,’ said Red October convener, Danie Heenop. He called on supporters to ‘within the law’ embark on protest actions to bring crimes of ‘ethnic cleansing’ and ‘hate speech’ to an end. zululandobserver.co.za/49620/red-card-for-protest-rally-2/
