new movie about birders - A Birders Guide to Everything. Heres what Stephen Ingraham ha to say about it. I enjoyed it. Gentle for the most part, with some genuine Birding moments...moments when what Birding is all really about clearly shows through the adolescent angst story line. The key set of definitions: Lister, Birder, Watcher...though perhaps a bit high-church (or even outright metaphysical), was apt. Ben Kingsley, as usual, delivered his character with precision. The acting as a whole was a cut above what might be expected in such a low budget effort. Good jobs all around. And it was certainly a kick seeing Ken Kaufman at the back of the wedding crowd and then doing his bit with the coat. The fact that one of the boys and two of the birders suffered from server testosterone poisoning did not distract too much. We all, unfortunately, know a few people like that, even in the relatively genteel society of birders. Still, they got two things so wrong it was almost funny. They showed Ben Kingsley with his shoulder bag strap on top of his binocular strap...no way he could have ever gotten his binos to his eyes...and the soundtrack featured a rifle shot when the duck (oops. Almost a spoiler.)... Surely that should have been a shotgun blast. Quibbles. I dont expect a huge increase in the numbers of kids taking up birding, but we might see some...and it certainly will act as an encouragement to those kids already in the ranks! This is good.
