news: Burundi and Lake Tanganyika are being removed from the trip due to safety reasons. The countrys elections are in March and the President, Pierre, would like to run for a third term, much to many citizens protest. He has said that he is planning a genocide if he is not allowed to. The situation as stands is that the streets are dangerous to wander after 6pm due to Hutu walking them with machetes, hoping to kill any tutsi they come across. The UN has been chased out of the country. I am so saddened by this news, not at the fact that we cannot go there but because the world and Burundi specifically does not need a major blowto its population as it already is such a tiny country. Burundi shares lake Tanganyika with Tanzania and its capital, Bujumbura, is on the lake, so I figure it wouldnt be wise to be in Kigoma(on lake Tanganyika on the Tanzanian side as the town is tiny and assistance may not be readily available should the lake be used as escape route for scared Tutsis or as an access control point. Whos still in? Im thinking Ethiopia/Djibouti would be a great alternative- awesome train rides too.
