A world class education begins with modern, rigorous curriculum Dear Douglas County School District High School Parent: We hope you and your high school student are enjoying the school year. In the Douglas County School District (DCSD), we believe our students are the future leaders of this country, and perhaps the world. Therefore, our goal is to provide a world class education for every student – to prepare them for the college or career path of their choice. A world class education begins with modern, rigorous curriculum. A common misunderstanding is that textbooks equal curriculum. That is not accurate. Instead, curriculum is actually the knowledge and skills (or outcomes) we know all students must learn in order to be successful. In DCSD, we have developed our own Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC). The DCSD GVC specifies what students need to know (content knowledge) and be able to do (skills). We know you are our partners in the education of your child, and we believe it will make a lot of sense for you to know what your student should be learning this year in our district. You may view the GVCs related to your student’s courses at dcsdk12.org/world-class-education/gvcs . The DCSD GVC is a combination of World Class Outcomes based on standards, the 4 Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity), 21st Century Skills, and content knowledge. The GVC tells each teacher, student, and parent the learning that is targeted each year and in some cases, for each subject. DCSD began the process of building our modern curriculum in 2012. As a District, we wanted more for our students than the state standards required. We examined the academic rigor and cognitive complexity of Colorado State Standards, Common Core academic standards, and national standards against what we know our students will need to know and do for success in their lifetimes. We found that most standards are written at lower level thinking skills than our students are capable of achieving. We also found that most standards are isolated fragments of learning disconnected from higher, more important concepts and skills. This is not best for our students. Therefore, after researching the knowledge and skills most desired by today’s businesses and employers, our teachers worked to integrate the state and national standards - which we consider the floor - to raise the cognitive complexity, or higher level thinking skills, to create our new World Class Outcomes (WCO). The result is integrated standards that require higher level thinking skills and are aligned to the knowledge and skills all students need most. Please visit our website (dcsdk12.org/world-class-education) to learn more about World Class Education in DCSD. You can also download the DCSD mobile app and click the GVC button. The app is available for free in iTunes and GooglePlay. Finally, we invite you to join our special webcast Thursday, November 20 at 4 p.m. to learn more about the GVCs and how they impact teaching and learning in the Douglas County School District. The event will be streamed at new.livestream/accounts/142979/gvcs-explained. We hope you find this information helpful. As always, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us or anyone in the district office. Sincerely, Dr. Elizabeth Fagen Dr. Dana Johnson-Strother Superintendent Chief Academic Officer
