ok buddies all…..Im charging you with a very special job. To provide an antidote for a terrible wrong thats been done. It concerns a young single mum - she is 22, and had her first little girl two and a half years ago, with me as her doula. During her first pregnancy, she met with a tide of disapproval - when she expressed a wish to give birth normally, in a birth pool or even at home, there were snorts of disdain all round - a midwife told her she didnt know what she was in for. She went on to have a beautiful simple birth, to breastfeed for two years, and to be an amazing mum. She has recently got pregnant again - and at first was very anxious about what to do. She knew it might be too much, although now she is in a relationship with the father and also, very confident as a mother. Even so, a few weeks backs, in search of support, she went for counselling regarding a termination. This is what she was told: Be careful…second births are far far worse than first ones…not only are they much more painful, you dont heal so well. The cervix doesnt recover. Not surprisingly, by the end of the meeting, she was very scared…and is still scared, though she has decided to go ahead and keep her baby. Can you help? I am furious about this counselling centre and intend to look into who precisely this person was. I have of course set her straight about the misinformation shes received, but it would be good for me to be able to present her with other peoples thoughts on how a second birth can be - especially when the first was easy and straightforward (she had no pain relief, used breathing and a shower, and her baby was born in a handful of hours). Can you help me to reassure her?
