okay. i realize that i didnt really feel i was able to think about or view 20 ft from stardom until i had the emotional reserves banked to do so. i thought perhaps it would be an interesting insight into, i cant really think of an appropriate phrase. instead it is on par with the most important films ever made. it is nominally about a few amazing women who are still alive and working and have been zelig-like throughout the entirety of contemporary popular music. yeah, i know thats enough. but it is REALLY also about the entire history of race in the united states and england, the role of the english invasion changing those dynamics forever, everything activism has been about since at least the 1950s until the present, the relation of men and women, the nature of spirituality and music, group dynamics and immersion vs star ego needs, etc etc etc. i only cried four or five times and i will be thinking about it for a long time to come. on the heels of seeing the neneh cherry interview and HER having been a part of so much of the culture of the last 40 years it has been a kind of moment. and lisa fischer has that mahalia thing: opens her mouth and everything otherworldly and this-worldly comes forth.
