(opvolg)Man arrested for murder of elderly Garsfontein resident The Garsfontein police have arrested a suspect alleged to have murdered an elderly man in his home in Great Dane Street. Ané Roux | 28 October 2013 11:40 The assistance of the community and great police work resulted in the Garsfontein police arresting a man suspected of killing the 82-year-old Deon Bezuidenhout in his Great Dane Street home last week. The elderly victim was stabbed several times in the neck with an unknown object. His body was then hidden under the mattress of his bed. His neighbours later made the gruesome discovery. The suspect was allegedly wearing a wrist watch belonging to the late Bezuidenhout at the time of his arrest over the weekend. According to Garsfontein police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Dave Muller, the police reacted to a tip-off from the community. “It was a very sensitive case because Bezuidenhout was an elderly man who was loved and respected by his fellow community members. Tensions were running high. Due to great investigative work, we managed to identify the suspect and arrest him before he could flee.” According to news reports, Bezuidenhout lived alone in Great Dane Street and was the caretaker of a nearby townhouse complex. When neighbours noticed that the gate to his house was standing open, they became suspicious. The Community Policing Forum and police were contacted while some of his neighbours went to investigate. Bezuidenhout’s bakkie was later recovered in Mamelodi East. The suspect is to remain in police custody pending his court appearance.
