panic, anxiety, being overwhelmed by fear often takes the form of obsessing on the surface stories we are projecting our fears into... the problem with this is that it is never ending and the content keeps morphing as we look for evidence of our fears all around us! likewise, the strategy of just trying to drown out the fear with positivity and affirmations etc doesnt work because it fails to compassionately and respectfully address the deeper root of why these feelings are so strong! the former strategy keep us spinning in an endless cycle. the latter often adds the insult of shame to the injury of overwhelm: just snap out of it etc... the key as i see it is two-fold: 1) drop beneath the surface fear and look for the deeper roots so you can address them on their own terms. 2) do some good reality testing on the surface fears once you are in a rational and clam space again. bust the cognitive distortions that tend to take hold and try to see them for what they are!
