politics politics politics!!!! REally! STill! OK, in the interests of my mental health, here is my personal version of Elections 101. 1. If you didnt vote, then shut the hell up. 2. If you didnt vote, then do you realise that your non vote is effectively a vote FOR the current government... oh, and by default, that means National.... again. 3. Didnt have time? Geee, wonder what planet you were on in the WEEK leading up to the election where polling booths... ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.. were open! 4. Were busy on the day..... ^^^^^ see above. 5. If you want a particular party in parliament..... THEY NEED THE PARTY VOTE. MMP - thats the fancy name for the voting system we have in NZ - makes politics a popularity contest for the individual MP.... Great if you have charisma and good teeth, not so great if you are an MP just interested in getting the job done with the interests of the people at the heart of your efforts. Ergo (if you dont know what that means.... make it your word of the day and look it up ;) ) .... where was I? Oh yes, ergo the beauty contests tend to clutter up what the real business is.... and yes, that goes for publicity stunts and dirty politics too. 6. This year there was a whole lot of banging on about this gadget called the Compass. In case you missed it... this is where you could go to find out which policies were the best fit with the things that are important to you ...... at the click of a mouse, the answers were at your finger tips. 7. Not knowing what the policies were so didnt know who to vote for.... once again ^^^^ see above. 8. Politics isnt supposed to be a horse race, where picking the prettiest coloured shirt, or the silliest name gives you as good a chance as any to pick a winner. Go figure. 9. Generally, one should actually read the voting slip, unless you are particularly gifted as a psychic and can just stab your finger with your eyes shut and tick them with good fore knowledge that your vote will actually count. ..... and finally 10. IF YOU DIDNT VOTE, THEN STOP YOUR BLEETING! for reasons why.... see above ^^^^^^. :) Namaste
