Purpose of job: The Developer/ Back End Developer will enhance the development of the British Council web sites which are published using a Drupal backend. He/she will form part of a wider multidisciplinary team including Designers, IAs and Quality Assurance engineers whose primary purpose will be to quickly iterate new site designs through a full life-cycle, typically: design, prototype, develop, test and deploy. The jobholder is expected to lead or be heavily involved during each stage of the programme. The work will be visible across the hundreds of multilingual web sites produced by our team. He/she will also decide or inform global British Council standards and guidelines and will be employed by other development teams in the company. He/she will be expected to engage with development partners both internally and externally and act as an advocate for the work the team produces. Context and environment: A new digital hub in East Asia has been set up to achieve a transformation in the British Council’s digital portfolio. It sits in East Asia, as a defined team to lead a major change programme, to transform the British Council into a digital business. The role is part of a team that is an extension of the core digital global team of digital technical experts (including user experience/IA, systems design and performance), a senior sector editorial team (based on the key editorial genres), a senior regional product development/editorial team (located in key markets around the world) and support functions in programme management, business analytics and finance. Many of the digital roles are co-located in functional departments where they are matrix managed.
