rainer Peter Cronin made a flying start to the HX Bookmakers Puppy Derby when he had a treble in Friday’s opening round at Harold’s Cross. But the honour of being the fastest winner went to Declan Murphy’s Mind The Net with a 28.68 run. ALEX IN SHOCK The opening heat produced a surprise result as the Martin Sweeney and Gary O’Carroll owned Corrin Alex (Black Shaw/ Corrin Queen) paid odds of almost 10-1 on the Tote after wining in 29.24. The major fancies were all slowly into stride as Razldazl Banjo took it up on the bend from Corrin Alex with favourite Killinan Queen with plenty to do after early trouble. Corrin Alex again hit the front off the final bend and he held the late run of Killinan Queen by a neck with Cuil Cool a length third. The tempo really stepped up in the second heat where Dodging Bullets (Head Bound/Borna Sky Lark) got the better of a good battle with Newlawn Impact. Dogging Bullets led up but Newlawn Impact took it up on the bend and led by a few lengths into the back. However the Peter Cronin trained Dodging Bullets came storming back and hit the front on the run-in to win by a length and a half from Newlawn in 28.74 with Mays King some four lengths third. In the third heat the best time was again set as Declan Murphy’s Mind The Net (Westmead Hawk/ Black Biscuit) produced a very determined run. He led up but was headed on the corner by Sharp Bolt and that one still let by two lengths on the third bend. But Mind The Net rallied strongly and got back up to win by a length in 28.68 PETER’S SECOND Peter Cronin completed a quick double when El Flutter (Westmead Hawk/ Little Flutter) defied plenty of traffic problems to land the fourth heat in 29.03. He wasn’t the best away, was hampered on the bend and was only fifth at one stage in the back straight as Deanridge Brutal led from Blackeyed Lady. Deanridge continued to lead to the run-in but El Flutter came with a flying finish and got up on the line to take it by a neck with Indigojack two and a half lengths third. Cronin completed his treble in dramatic fashion when Chicago (Milldean Panther/ Bebo Babe) snatched victory in the final stride of Heat 5. Jaytee Monaco set the pace with Chicago going second after three of the runners were involved in first bend trouble. Chicago closed steadily down the back and then came strongly up the straight to win it by a neck from Jaytee Monaco in 29.19 with Aclamon Rossi getting up to be a five and a half length third after a troublesome path. There was a minor surprise in Heat 6 as the second favourite got the better of Shes A Terror after a great battle. Shes A Terror, returning from a lay-off, broke fast and led Mays Princess by a couple of lengths into the back with Phoenix Legend in third. Shes A Terror continued to lead to the run-in but the Ian Lawless and Jenny Mulligan owned Mays Necklace was now too strong and got up to win by a neck in 29.04 with Phoenix Legend three lengths third. Jim O’Kane’s Cromac Belle (Droopys Scolari/ Cape Nikita) was a surprise winner of Heat 7, although there was nothing lucky about her victory. Champagne Jackie dictated the pace after a fast start from the inside trap, but Cromac Belle was never far away in second spot. Cromac Belle gradually moved upsides the leader turning for home and despite Champagne Jackie’s best attempts to rally, Cromac Belle was too strong and she stuck on well to take the verdict by a half length in 29.03. Pat O’Sullivan’s Burnt Oak Becky (Head Bound/ Burnt Oak Beauty) produced a professional display of front running to deny an eye-catching Aclamon Messi in the eighth heat. The latter was a warm favourite, but completely fluffed his lines at trap rise before displaying big pace to recover. He flew into second spot before the third turn, but couldn’t get to Burnt Oak Becky who continued to set a strong gallop out front. Trained by Jerry Melia, Becky dug deep on the run in to repel the challenge of Aclamon Messi by a length and a half in 28.90. WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE BY DAYLEWIS Droopys Daylewis (Droopys Scolari/ Droopys Diva) was one of the more impressive winners of the evening when seeing off some very talented opposition in Heat 9 for Brendan Keogh and Simon Senyk. Odds-on favourite Ecclestone overcame a moderate start to lead the field into the back straight, but the Ian Reilly trained Droopys Daylewis was hot on his heels in second and he soon moved through the gears to take charge. Powering down the far side, Daylewis struck the front before the third turn and then eased clear to emerge a superb three and a half length scorer in a very slick 28.71. He is clearly capable of having a major say in the remainder of this competition. WHAT A STRIKE BY VANROONEY There was no doubting the display of Vanrooney in Heat 10 was the most swashbuckling of the opening round winners as he came storming through the field to pull right away in the latter stages. Trained by Owen McKenna for Peter O’Toole and Keith Doherty, the powerful son of Ace Hi Rumble and Lady Deise was forced wide on the turn to sit in fifth entering the back and despite a slight bump, he switched inside and through a gap to move third. He was now in full stride and he simply cruised up to the leaders before shooting to the lead between the last two bends. Once doing so he flew up the home straight to record a fast 28.88, four and a half lengths clear of early leader Doc Martin. RONNIE FINISHES WITH A DOUBLE Blenhiem Tricks made an impressive turn of early speed count in the penultimate heat. The son of Christmas Box and Blenhiem Diva flew to the front before the turn and he burnt off his rivals down the back straight. His task became easier with the hot favourite Star Ace encountering serious traffic problems at the turn. In contrast Blenhiem Tricks was never touched as he scorched clear before running out a facile seven length winner in 29.07 for Charles Martyn and Ronnie McKeown. Beautys Whisper held Star Ace by a short head to take second. Racing concluded with Atitboy (Kinloch Brae/ Hather For Pat) completing a quick double for Ronnie McKeown as he got the better of Razldazl Butch after a protracted battle. The former hit the front early, but lost his stride briefly at the second turn, allowing Razldazl Butch to move to the front. Dudley Wilmott’s Atitboy was soon back in full stride, however, and he dug deep in the latter stages to take over in the dying yards for a length verdict over Razldazl Butch in 29.28.
