[repost: message me and Ill send you the text & pass on your details, or just message Anne Mulhall. Thanks!] Academic friends, We are organising a letter to the Irish Times next week on the announcement of the Working Group on Direct Provision. The working group contains no asylum seekers, despite nationwide protests, organising and public speaking out over the last two months. It is clear from the proposed terms of reference that the system of direct provision (and deportation) will simply continue, with perhaps some minor improvements, so long as these are cost effective. Its terms of reference are so restricted that it will do more harm than good, especially as this is really going to be the last chance in this governments life time to effect any significant changes to the system. If you are interested in reading the letter with a view to perhaps signing it, just message me here and I will forward it to you. We hope to have collected the signatures by Monday morning 10GMT. Thanks to everyone who has already signed - we have already gathered a large number of signatories, which is great. This is of obvious relevance to academics based in Ireland, or focusing on society, politics and culture in Ireland, but it is of course open to any colleague who would wish to contribute. Please feel free to tag others under this message to bring it to their attention.
