rotterdam | tent | tent academy awards 2013 | opening today | 12/7/2013 > 25/8/2013 Deze zomer staat in het teken van de beste jonge videokunst van Nederland en gastland Griekenland in de jaarlijkse TENT Academy Awards. Deze filmcompetitie presenteert de top van de eindexamen video’s, films en animaties van Nederlandse en internationale kunstacademies. Tijdens de Awardshow in de Rotterdamse bioscoop Cinerama worden de genomineerde films getoond en wordt de winnaar feestelijk bekend gemaakt. Het videowerk van de genomineerden wordt tevens tentoongesteld in TENT en gaat daarna on tour langs verschillende filmfestivals en instellingen voor hedendaagse kunst in Europa. Sinds 2010 wordt ieder jaar een gastland uitgenodigd om het beste audiovisuele talent te tonen tijdens de TENT Academy Awards. Voorheen zijn Duitsland, de Benelux en Turkije uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan de competitie. In een kunstenveld dat onder druk is komen te staan, is het voor TENT belangrijk om jong talent in een relatief moeilijk toegankelijke categorie te ondersteunen. De TENT Academy Awards geeft pas afgestudeerde kunstenaars de kans zich te profileren voor vakdeskundigen, film- en kunstliefhebbers. Dit jaar worden de werken van de Nederlandse afstuderende kunstenaars samengebracht met werken van jonge kunstenaars uit Griekenland, momenteel een van de brandhaarden van de economische crisis. Hoe kijken startende Griekse kunstenaars aan tegen het leven dat op hen ligt te wachten? De competitie geeft uiteindelijk ook inzicht in wat jonge kunstenaars van hun toekomst verwachten. De jury en de scouts worden gevormd door vooraanstaande kunstenaars, curatoren en critici binnen de Nederlandse en internationale kunstwereld. Scouts zullen de eindexamenexposities van de Nederlandse en Griekse kunstacademies bezoeken om zo jong talent te nomineren voor de TENT Academy Awards. Inke Arns (DE) Inke Arns is artistiek leider Hartware MedienKunstVerein in Dortmund en freelance curator gespecialiseerd in mediakunst. Ze stelde ondermeer in Dortmund, Berlijn, Hong Kong, Warshau en Novi Sad tentoonstellingen samen. Arns doceerde aan universiteiten en academies in Berlijn, Leipzig, Zurich en Rotterdam en won voor de tentoonstelling ‘Sounds Like Silence’ een prijs van de Duitse AICA. Ze schreef o.a. Objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear! Die Avantgarde im Rückspiegel (2004). Wim Waelput (BE) Wim Waelput is als stafmedewerker artistieke projecten verbonden aan de School of Arts in Gent. Hij is curator en artistiek verantwoordelijk voor de tentoonstellingen bij KIOSK, een expositieruimte voor actuele kunst in Gent. Hij stelde diverse tentoonstellingen samen, onder andere tijdens Art Rotterdam 2013, waar hij namens het Mondriaan Fonds werk wat door startstipendia was gerealiseerd samenbracht. Angelique Spaninks (NL) Angelique Spaninks is artistiek directeur van MU in Eindhoven. Ook leidt ze het jaarlijkse kunst, muziek en technologie festival, STRP in Eindhoven. Ze werkte eerder als editor en criticus voor het Einhovens Dagblad, en als kunstcriticus voor Kunstbeeld en Tubelight. Ze droeg o.a. bij aan de boeken Station to Station (2011), en MU5 (2003). # The sixteen nominees for the TENT Academy Awards have been announced. In recent weeks, curators, art critics, and artists, for the annual video, film, and animation competition, scouted ten Dutch art students and six Greek art students. The nominees’ work will be shown during the Award Show on Friday 12 July, and the international jury will also announce the winners of the TENT Academy Award and the Best Foreign Film Award. The international jury consisting of Angelique Spaninks (artistic director of MU and STRP), Inke Arns (artistic director Hartware MedienKunstverein), Wim Waelput (artistic director KIOSK) and Marina Gioti (filmmaker / curator) will then choose the winner. The winner of the TENT Academy Award wins an artist’s residency at Skopelos, Greece. The Best Foreign Film winner will be artist-in-residence at Het Wilde Weten, Rotterdam. TENT Academy Awards As the arts come increasingly under pressure, it’s important for TENT to support young talent in a relatively inaccessible genre. For over twelve years, the TENT Academy Awards have provided a stage for young audio-visual artists. After the Award Show, the nominated works will be shown at TENT. The TENT Academy Awards will then be exhibited at the Dutch Institute, Athens, from 29 September to 3 October. After this, the TENT Academy Awards will go on an international tour.
