silkamecklenburg.net/articles.htm #vegan #beingvegan #lloveanimals The big ‚V‘ I would like to make a confession: Sometimes I don‘t really like the word ‚Vegan‘. Probably because I don‘t like labels in general. Why is it that I have to label myself to make clear what I do not do? Should not rather the people who do certain things highlight the facts with a label? „Oh, sorry I am a Carnivore.“ Sympathetic face. „If you don‘t have a pet, I‘d rather like to eat at my place.“ Sure, one can have bigger problems. But besides that; since I became interested in the things that happen beyond my comfort zone, I am spending an even more interesting amount of time justifying myself for making appropriate decisions. And I am wondering: In the age of internet and communication in light speed, is there any breathing, mentally fairly healthy person who doesn‘t know what‘s going on? Yes, stupid people are everywhere. But there are even many stupid people who choose to inform themselves and are not closing their eyes anymore. Which makes them less stupid, right? So here is the thing: Being interested in- and educate yourself only about- the things that seem relevant for you, means that you create a vacuum around knowledge. Would you still feel intelligent, empathetic and educated, when there would be evidence that your wisdom lingers only on the things you desire and love? Well, this is your lucky century! There is plenty of information that your brain will love. And bonus: It will nurture you heart and soul too. Yes, it can be hard to distinguish a credible source of information from one that provides so called facts, cobbled together and paid by agencies for lobbyists of the meat- and fashion industry. But thankfully we are not fools. While researching, there will be gut feeling and conscience at our side, that will guide us through the jungle of wrong and right. And let‘s never forget that the moving pictures we see are hard evidence and more significant than a thousand studies. Talking about jungle. Ever seen a wild animal in a hideous dress on TV that smiled and nodded after being asked if it is fun to work for those two-legged individuals it entertains? Oh God, I know there is a high probability that you might have. Theme parks, zoos and circuses are primeval, thoughtless ways of entertaining you and your children. I know You know that not a single animal is participating by choice. They are not choosing to be killed for food, to be a handbag, or a coat. We make the decision for them. They are not threatening us; they welcome us peaceful in their kingdom. There is no excuse for the way we ‚welcome‘ them with heinous brutality in ours. They are not nuggets in a box, but fried individuals, that make us look and feel as ugly as we should be, after shovelling them in our mouth. All of us who roll their eyes and feel irritated by another post on facebook about animal rights, might consider, that there must be a reason why some people bother to irritate us regularly with all these pictures, quotes and videos. It is up to us to realize, that there is a direct link from the decisions coming from our heart, to the harm that is being done to a living soul, to the society we become. We already eliminated many gruesome and senseless traditions in the past. (Well, there would probably still be some indigenous people who would happily like to nibble on your arm.) Yet, it seems impossible for some of us wannabe-omniscient modern world people, to make the connection. To realize that intelligence, empathy, pain and fear is interspecies. That once you pay others to kill, you make a direct decision for another soul. Once you grin, or roll your eyes while hearing things you don’t want to hear, you are rather making a coward of yourself, than being the empathetic person you probably think you are. Praying to God for mercy and not even bother to grant others their natural right to exist, only shows how far away we still are, from wearing the crown of creation, or being modern. It still makes big bucks to tell generation after generation, that animals are made for us to eat, wear and being entertained by them. But with all respect: We own nothing here. Not the planet, not animals, not each other and not the ultimate rights. The planet would be just fine without us. What is the value of a two-legged high heel wearing model, or a two-faced bank manager for the planet? Could it be that we are here to protect our home instead of robbing it of all its beauty? If that theory is right, let‘s all hope we are all alone in the universe. People often say things like „Children are our future.“ What a beautiful statement! If there would not be the giant problem that we do everything to make it one day impossible for them to live in that future. When possible, we should take kids out in the nature and to animal sanctuaries and let them experience our fellow creatures in less harmful, tragic environments. One does not have to be a scientist to see the potential of a child that recognizes the significance and value of the tiniest worm, up to the ones that look like him. What could be more effective to end wars?
