so i have been watching some banter back and forth on the 7x14 mini lathe email list on yahoo groups. some people say you can bore the chuck some say you cant. i needed to be able to pass 3/4 material through the bore. it passes through the spindle but not the chuck. i was told i would have to use a 4 jaw or a 5 3 jaw chuck. i have a 4 jaw but its a 4 and i dont have a backing plate plus i dont want to fuss with the 4 jaw. a 5 would be nice but the motor is already strained, and 5 of iron would strain it even more. none of these were a good choice at the moment so i let the matter rest. well i have been doing a bit of messing around making parts and noticed that my chuck is off. no big surprise. i havent removed it from my machine in 13 years. you see i realized i got this thing in 2000. the chuck is dated 1999 and i realized i got the year after the chuck was made. that thing has been in the same place for 13 years!! so i decided i need to remove it and clean it and see if i can get rid of a little of the run out, and also i wanted to write a sentence that has the word and in it as many times as possible. i think i did a good job. the chuck is easy to remove, three nuts hold it on. put a piece of paper under the chuck to catch the nuts when the fall. i was amazed at how little actual debris was inside the mounting flange. remember this has been on here over a decade. i expected a damn rusty mess full of chips and stale oil but was pleasantly surprised. i took the chuck to my layout area and took it down to parts and was again very surprised at the lack of wear, and how little chips made their way inside. i took the chuck body and cleaned it and hit it up on the scotchbrite wheel to get rid of the patina on it. i cleaned the inside and did some measuring. it has been said that you cant bore out the stock chuck because you cut into the screw threads. the never really say was screw threads, or how much you cut into them. i could easily clear 3/4 and only get into the heads of the screws. and thats what i did. i took the chuck put it in my mill and bored it 11/16 then stepped up to 3/4 i never got into the threads, but the heads of the small screws in the middle did have a small chunk taken from them. thats was ok with me.
