so, my contribution for autism AWARENESS month: One of my kids with autism is trying to self advocate and calls the case worker at the county assistance office because health insurance has been cut off despite the procedures there. For those of you unfamiliar with how disability systems work, in Pennsylvania (as in many other states) if you have a state qualifying disability, you get, at a minimum, medicaid as a benefit, regardless of income. Without it, you dont have access to many of the other systems of rehabilitation, such as wraparound, job training and coaching, transportation, etc. Kid: Mom, I cant talk to my case worker anymore, I cant process what shes saying Me (taking phone): Hi, this is kids mom. I need to make sure Kids medical assistance is turned back on in a timely manner, the medications are critical. County Assistance Case Worker: Well, just because you have Aspergers doesnt mean that you cant process your renewal paperwork in a timely manner. Me: Yes it does. Thats EXACTLY what it means. These are the people in charge of helping people with autism, and THEY have no idea how it works.
