summer 78 i was living at Golden, a ghost town about 3 miles up Coyote Creek from the bucolic town of Wolf Creek (famous for hippie communes, womens land, gay farms)...the land i was staying on was owned by Carl Wittman (The Gay Manifesto) & his lover, the artist Allan Troxler...they had headed back east for an indefinite spell & left me with a beautiful old farm, with an orchard, & a barn that Carl & Allan had finished inside to accommodate their flings of Scottish country dancing...as i had been weaned on those silly films where the kids put a show on in the barn, i had organized & staged a community art show in early july 78 & decided that for my birthday i would put up a solo show in that space! adventurous, determined, & full of myself, i threw an opening night bash that brought friends from eugene, ashland, san francisco & the local vicinity as well (there were a lotta queers in them thar hills)...the big draw, in reality, was the showing of The Word Is Out, which was just being released so we were the Josephine county premiere! (if not the Oregon premiere!) the night was a success, so many people showed up & the film was a hit with everyone...our friend Tede Matthews was one of the stars of the documentary...it was the perfect way to spend a birthday, back then, it gave me resolve to keep at my art & it taught me that anyone can put on a show in a barn!
