Witchcraft, however, exercised by people of lower economic and cultural level, was seen as a byproduct of the magic. People resorted to witches to ward off bad luck or improve yields. In the beginning it was a beneficent witchcraft. The witches or wizards called white magic practiced. This was seen in West as in the East, in ancient Rome, in ancient Athens, in ancient Egypt and even in Africa were talismans against the evil eye, amulets, magical herbs and potions.
