taken from......carmarthenjournal.co.uk/ AN old photograph from the dedication of St Clears War Memorial has been returned to the town after it was found in a Malvern antiques sale. Cwmbran man Stuart Cameron found the original picture from 1921 among dusty old prints after visiting the Worcestershire town to research his family tree. Mr Cameron, who has an interest in all things to do with the First World War, said he just could not leave the picture at the sale and wanted it returned to its rightful home. As a former councillor, he contacted St Clears Town Council, who accepted the picture on behalf of the town. It was at an antiques fair in Malvern, he said. Because of my interest in First World War issues I just couldnt leave it there. I thought it was such a nice photograph that recorded a momentous occasion for St Clears. I wanted to return it to its rightful home. It is such a lovely picture, I felt sad seeing it there. I dont know how it came to be in Malvern, I didnt ask the question. The picture, taken by S W Phillips of St Clears, is dated March 9, 1921. A caption under the picture reads: The unveiling and dedication of the St Clears Memorial Cross, erected by the inhabitants of the town and district in ever glorious memory of 23 local men who died for their king and country in the Great War, 1914-1919. St Clears mayor Jane Rees has presented the picture to the Royal British Legion St Clears branch. Legion chairman David Jones said: It is of great importance to us, especially as it was taken by a St Clears person as well. There are probably copies of it around, but we werent aware that the original was up in Malvern. It is very special to the Legion. Mr Jones said that although the Legion had nowhere to display the picture, it would be added to its archive. An exhibition of work by S W Phillips has been running at the Mezzanine in St Clears for around four years. The archives, one of the largest independent collections in Wales, contains thousands of photographs of events, which took place in Carmarthenshire from 1900 up until present day. If anyone is interested in viewing any of these original images and records, a Facebook page has been created facebook/WestWalesArchives
