Message: Tom; You disabled my comments on Facebook because everything I had to say about your advocacy for the homeless was not positive - and it still is not. But now, past your tenderfoot days in the homeless arena, you are starting to see the problem as I, a 3 1/2 year homeless citizen, do. Once you begin to connect the dots between the shelters, the not-for-profits, the Salvation Army and too many churches and other seemingly do-gooder organizations, you will come to realize that the federal and state subsidies for addressing homelessness are so large that they are the largest, if not sole, source of income for many of these privatized services - thereby creating a massive homeless industrial complex that only makes money, and grows if the problem persists. And so there is absolutely NO motivation for agencies to be judged by how many people they move out of homelessness - there is only money in it for them if they continue to keep people classified as homeless and get paid by the government for servicing them. Even if they move them into permanent housing, that housing is government subsidized and there is even less motivation for the people in that housing to work beyond government income limits because they can only make enough to reduce their benefits but not to get out of poverty completely - so why work at all? As for your methods, I find it disingenuous that you can pose as a homeless person one minute and then go to your computer, cellphone or media interview the next - without ever having to deal with the realities that the homeless community does. Should anything drastic happen, youre just an ATM away from salvation or a get out of jail free card because the police dont want to be on TV arresting the homeless teacher. Beware of the celebrity you now enjoy, because should you ever truly become homeless, you wont be able to have that anymore. And also realize that should this experiment not be able to pay your and your familys bills (yes, possessive, not families) your altruism will need to be seriously readjusted - just like the Salvation Army, you will screw the homeless to keep your job. In the end, who would have thought that Woodward and Bernsteins Deep Throat would have the answer to why there is a homeless explosion in the US. Follow the money, he said.
