tearing through the pitch black of the cobwebbed path, we sprinted like mad men to get out the other side. Breaking through the darkness, we came to the end. Corpses hung from walls and in cages with spikes and leather straps. Caked blood sat crusted on every inch of the floor and various torture tools sat on an old wooden work bench in the corner. “Well this is some kind of town you’ve got here Zenas” I smirked sarcastically. “A flesh eating monster in ever sewer, and a torture chamber on every corner. This is just great.” Zenas didn’t seem to find my last minute humour very funny. “Prepare yourself.” He cautioned. The defiler will come soon.” “Alright then” I answered back. Walking back to the far side of the room, I put the torch in one hand and grabbed the biggest blade I could find; a giant butchers knife that I was pretty sure hadn’t been used on pork. Zenas picked up a long spearing tool and held it ready. “Alright, we don’t have much time” I said, whispering to Zenas. “But the only way we’re going to get out of this alive, is by getting past him. So, when he comes at us, you spear him, and i’ll throw this cleaver at his head, hopefully that’ll give us enough of a distraction to get by him. Got it?” Zenas shook his head. “I’m ready.” As we stood waiting for the monster to come crashing through I was reminded again of my father’s last words to me. Be a man, that’s all you can do. Waiting there in the torchlight We heard the horrible whistling sound and as the defiler stepped through the portal I laughed; I still couldn’t believe any of this was actually happening to me, but with any luck we’d be out of this Hell hole soon enough. Using it’s host like a puppet, it raised up it’s arm and spoke. “Are you finally going to become a part of me?” It said in a ragged gasp. There was nothing left but to stand tall. “Come and get us asshole” I snarled. As it began its inexorable pace forward, we readied ourselves for the final curtain call. -Final show down in the sewer between Karowitz, Zenas, And the defiler-
