thank you for all your cheers to welcome my hawaiian hurricanes. i live on Oahu island, and the first hurricane is delayed til about 2 hours from now and has being downgraded to just a tropical storm (no property or human casualties expected, just lots of rain). it has just left Hawaii island and was also downgraded as a storm as the big mountains stopped it! i really hate the media, a reporter was in downtown Hilo, and mostly just frowning and shaking the camera, then she zooms to some street signs that are normally suspended the old fashion way with chains, and she said look, the chains are swaying. similarly on the news on tv, there was a segment where on one side of the tv was a photo of a civil defense office on a phone interview, then on another side of the tv was some video footage of people walking in the rain, zooming of waves, zooming of rain gutters, zooming of big palm trees swaying, and on the background of the tv was a digital wallpaper red and blue, similar to a July 4th flag theme, swaying too, HOW WRACKING APPROPRIATE! i dont even understand why everyone rushes to Safeway or Costco and buys food and water. Hello? if you live in a suburban town (most all homes in Hawaii are in cities, within walking distance of a grocery store or first aid or shelter), then sure, stock up for the bomb fallout. but if the Safeway is just an arms way, electricity or not, if we are in trouble, civil defense will come in and hand out the food to whoever needs it, literally! it is an island, why stock up? nothing will come in or out, what is here is here, and it does not matter, it sits on the shelves of safeway or it sits in your pantry. worse, people start to return the foods once the storm passes. really, FEMA guidelines do not apply to a small city island.d maybe all we need is fill up our bathtubs with water, so we can flush the toilet! i do appreciate the day off from work today, the entire State is shut down, i guess we need the time to sit and gather with our families and watch tv and call each other. i do think taping your windows, bringing all your plants and outdoor furniture inside, is good, so that: i did. i took appart my 200 pocket balcony vertical garden, my back is sore. was filled with tuber and rhizome plants (sinningias, kohlerias, achimenes), now to spend the time off work, cleaning all those roots and replant them. and out and about they go after our second hurricane comes in Sunday. ok, i do hear a siren on the street, yikes.
