thatsteezy/6-things-all-new-dancers-should-know/ So I read this article today, and cant say I agree to this as a whole. If this are the 6 things ALL dancers should know, then this article is not exactly what I call correct. So with that said, I would like to write my own 6 things ALL dancers should know, and also Tag many Pioneers of this HipHop culture to see if they have any REAL input that we all can learn from as well. But before I start, I would say a dancer should know musicality and dance on beat before anything... lets continue... Some of my points are responding to this article. 1) I dont agree with the fact you should go to just any alumni member for knowledge. Your direction/path is very different from theirs, in dance and in life. Unless youre doing it just to hear some funny stories, otherwise its pointless. I think you need to be selective on what you put in your head as a dancer, and build the right knowledge from other successful dancers that are still in the dance community or scene today. I wouldnt ask a random person who doesnt dance anymore for advice on what I need to do. I would ask dancers who have succeeded in my eyes and became successful in using dance as a life support. 2) Please learn your History! Give credit to the creators! I think its great if you wanna know your teams history, but its more important to do your research about the Pioneers who created these dance styles we do today. That to me is a little more important then remembering John doe that used to dance on the team you are now on. At the end of the article it states, dont forget about us... who is us? The BIGGER picture is, not forgetting about the amazing dancers who once created nothing out of something... the ones who invented these styles we still do today... what are THEIR names?! Why and how was all this created?! Where did they get their inspiration from? If you want to be inspired and know how far you can go with your dance, dont ask an alumni member who most likely isnt dancing anymore... look to the dancers / Pioneers who help pave the way for all of us. Its bigger than some stage this article is talking about. These dancers are still living that life... the life we wanna know so much about. 3) Dancers being competitive. In this article, the 5th thing dancers should know is that Winning isnt everything. I totally agree with this statement. However, below there was a sentence that said If your only goal is to prove you’re better than everyone else, then you’re in the wrong line of work, ‘cuz in this world, someone’s always better than you. I disagree 100 percent. You without a doubt should try to be the BEST, not only in dance but in whatever you do in life. Otherwise, you WILL always be below someone else. That is the definition of an UNDER ACHIEVER. If you do not gun for the top, others will move you out of the way to get that spot. With out being better, and trying to out do each other, we would not see fast growth in our dance or society. Look at the Olympics, do you think that they are there NOT to be the BEST in the world? Do you think they are there NOT to break records?! Other teams / Companies do better in this community because they have more drive to make themselves the best in the community. Its that simple! Then there are those dancers / teams / crews telling themselves that theres always someone better so they set themselves out for failure. Well ladies and gents... what if I told you that you can be the BETTER dancer? What if you were the NEXT best thing? How would you even know that if you do not test yourself, or push yourself beyond your limits? Yes, there can be someone better than you, but you can be better than others as well. At the end of the day, the person that wants it the most, and who is willing to fight to be the best will excel. We all inspire each other to be better, but that statement that I read in the article makes it seem like why try and thats not ok. 4) Comparing a hobby to a lifestyle. There are some dancers who enjoy dance and do it on the side because its a great outlet. Then there are other dancers who LIVE this lifestyle because this is their choice and for some, this dance is all that they have. Please dont mistake the two... passion runs deep in certain peoples bones more than others. And with that said, we should talk about classes and learning / listening to random information. I dont believe everyone should teach a class. I think being knowledgable and having earned stripes should be your credentials as a teacher. Instead of just being a popular dancer or someone who can put an 8 count together, or even write a post on the internet. Knowledge is what feeds the mind, but where do we get this knowledge from? Would you allow someone who hasnt passed simple math, teach you calculus? I dont think so! I am very selective on whos teaching me, what Im learning and who has the ability to help me grow in my dance. People who are well-educated and have the reputation as a successful dancer should be good enough. We allow anyone to teach now a days, most dancers listen to anyone with an opinion. This leads to us loosing out on so many valuable lessons and History. Make the right choice on who should teach your soul how to move, and your mind how to create/learn. Now, if you just wanna take class for no reason at all, then theres plenty of random classes that you can learn from that have no meaning, and Im sure the choreographer created the piece an hour before class started ... but if you wanna see how deep the river goes, learn from someone who speaks a lot in class, tells you what the moves are called, where its from, and why they were inspired to do the style or piece that was created. 5)Biting. This is very simple. Dont do anything similar to anyone else. Try to create things people have never thought of or take an idea and re-create it to make it 100x better. That way you can claim it as yours. For example, cassette tapes, CDs, iPods, all play music and all completely different ideas. Being inspired does not mean its ok to bite. There is an unwritten rule, once someone is known drastically for something, it is not always ok to try and flip that. It becomes their signature, therefore an identity. If its not broken, dont fix it Something things are better left alone. If you do decide to bite, it will only stunt your growth, damage your reputation, and redirect attention to the person who created it first. 6) Even easier... as a community we should stop allowing judges with no credits or titles underneath their belt to judge a competition. Dancers please dont allow people of a lower caliber tell you what is good or what is bad. Everyone in the community should respect each others opinions of course. But to me I would never allow someone who plays pop warner tell a NFL player how its done. I want real results and opinions from people who have already gone through what Im going through, and is experienced and have succeeded in their journey to the top. Allowing someone who has battled or competed judge me, even if that person hasnt won nothing or has not have quote Trophies is very foolish. Im sorry I rather not enter that competition. *Hint why AOV stop competing. Please dancers be aware on who we allow to hold the ball on the court. Not everybody is a somebody, and not everyone deserves to pass judgement on others if they have not succeeded themselves. Well I thank you for reading this. This status is just my personal opinion that is all... This status is not to Dog at all on steezy, I still agree with their points on being relevant and how Your Darkest Hour Can Become Your Finest Moment. #truth I wrote this status to show that we need to be more knowledgable and speak to our dance community with words of wisdom and History, in order to see growth... My words might be harsh but I only wish the best for this dance scene. Thank you. PS. To all of the AMAZING pioneers and friends I have tagged in this status, please feel free to post your thoughts and knowledge on here for everyone to read! I really do admire your thoughts and accomplishments, and hope everyone can get a better idea on things that a dancer should know.
