...the 1st time I met, Lance Diamond. We boys in the neighborhood knew of a, Willie Shingles. You see, somebodys older brother knew him. He was a real live working singer! It was the late 60s and many of us were getting into playing instruments and singing; mostly because the Beatles and Ed Sullivan made it socially, OK. Two of Norwood Avenues Ruffino brothers sang and played in bands. And, one of them, Mike, worked around the corner at a cleaners on Bryant. Mike and I were shooting the sheeit with Andy Rapillo, who later worked with Lance and then was Rick James Punk Funk bass player. Right then, Willie happens to walk in to pick up his vines. Andy starts to introduce me to him when Willie interrupts with, Hey man, nice to meet ya. Then turns to Andy and says, I go by Alphonse these days. Alphonse Jusef ! Then he started talkin about Oscar Brown Jr., Lou Rawls, and Gene Chandler. By the Disco era of the mid to late-70s he had reinvented himself, again, as Lance Diamond. R.I.P.
