the A&D years... I think Sly Stone (aka Sylvester Stewart), completely broke the mold of what a black group should sound like in the 60s. And, like Miles Davis did with jazz, and Hendrix did with rock, Sly changed the direction of soul (or R&B music as it existed, at that time).
