the reality of running an animal rescue, of any kind Im sure, is a certain percentage of the unwanted have legitimate issues that make it so that even with the best intentions, time, and love they cannot be saved. Sometimes the best thing you can give them is a respectful death before they cause or inflict any more suffering or harm to themselves or others. This is our responsibility to the animals we try to help because we all only have so much time/resources and there is such a demand. The last thing any of us want to do is kill the very animals we are so dedicated to protect but that is the reality. Not from the outside but the inside, the ones of us who are taking the tough cases. I had one of these animals, and although I knew, as the one who spent the most time and had the biggest commitment, (obviously for me its a horse) I was bullied (by well meaning uninformed people) into not doing what I knew was right and both people and the horse suffered because of my lack of courage to do what I knew was the right thing. In the whirl of accusations, threats and feeling like I need to defend myself and my program I feel like I need to stop and acknowledge the loss of a life. I did my best, a lot of people did their best and I know this little horse did her best too, and sometimes success looks nothing better than one horse that wasnt pulled out dead at the other end of livestock transport truck. RIP Trixi horse, it should have been me with you there. Im sorry I wasnt braver
