A long-distance liaison between two WA-based Aussies and a Scot, the trio’s third album in as many years is of sufficient quality to merit comparison with works delivered by Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Mark O’Connor, Mike Marshall, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and other alumni of the American school of acoustic excellence. In Talk, violinist Chris Stone, upright bassist Holly Downes and steel-string guitarist Graham McLeod show a similar level of vision, virtuosity and ensemble awareness as those acclaimed ‘A’ team players, while drawing on Celtic folk, bluegrass, classical, country and jazz elements to weave evocative and excitingly original soundscapes prompted by places, people and situations. The String Contingent’s trialogues and travelogues explore the full spectrum of musical expression with the players dazzling solo, in unison or creating complex patterns with exchanges and juxtapositions.
