there is no job security in politics; you are either in or out in 4 years. Most of these people have jobs/were professionals prior to election. Like anyone who loses their job (because they were not re-elected) they need to return to their normal lives. (if they ran and lost, then maybe they need to revisit what they did while they were at the table that kept them from re-election). If they decide to not run again, they are not entitled to anything IMO. Municipal politicians do it, so should town/city politicians. and technically, except for health reasons, they should not be able to retire midterm. you get elected to sit at the table 4 yrs, not to grab what you can and retire before election time so you can get severance. There should be no severance package for these folks. A stipend, reasonable expenses WHILE IN OFFICE (note REASONABLE expenses), and be done with it! Freaking city politicians love living off the teat of taxpayers. Time for the public cash cow to dry up and be put to pasture. Remember the good old days? when being in politics was VOLUNTARY??
