there used to be a time when i could afford to go into a modest sized record store, spend a few hours, and walk out with every record i was even mildly interested in hearing. as the years have gone on, my tastes have gotten more refined and picky, ironically. this is partially due to the realization that i will never hear as many records as i want, that trying to do so is an impossible task that will drive me insane or broke or both. my response? focus and spend my available listening hours to things i specifically want to actively listen to. turn on the blinders to most of what comes across my radar, and focus on the stuff i know i will like, and skip the majority of the rest. yet despite an active decision to narrow my focus, despite not having as much disposable income, and despite not having as much time to spend listening to things, i often find myself overwhelmed with how much amazing music is being created on a daily basis. no, ill never get to all of it. a small part of me, the old me, freaks out a little bit that ill probably miss the majority of it. the rest of me, the new me, laughs at the first part, in the knowledge that i dont ever have to listen to bad or even mediocre music again ever. theres just so much great things i want to put into my ears for me to bother with lesser than amazing. to all of you who create music, or have a hand in releasing music, or hosting live shows, or live with musicians and support them that way, etc etc etc, thank you. please dont ever stop.
