Until the events of July 1863, my best-known Civil War ancestor served under a succession of mostly undistinguished commanding generals in the Eastern theater (he was particularly disenchanted with Joe Hooker). The major shake-up in the wake of Gettysburg and Vicksburg found him temporarily under U.S Grant. He later became aide-de-camp to General Sherman in his Marc to the Sea, commanding the left wing.
