My website is a social media website created to help college students around the world to buy, sell, and exchange their college textbooks 100% free of charge. The mission of my website is to give a voice to the worldwide college student community, and to help them save thousands of dollars when they are buying and selling their books. Facebook is saying that my website is a cheap copy of their site and that the reason I named my website blassbooks is to abuse the fame of their mark and to make my members believe my site is own by Facebook. The reality is the name of my website means fast books Blass means fast in greek and the books part is because that is the main purpose of my site. One of the main reasons I created this website is because I was tired of being bullied by the educational institutions and the high rising fees from amazon. My website is a solution to this problem affecting the whole world, and now I have to fight another giant bully who has decided to sue my company. “At first I thought it was a mistake that Facebook couldn’t possibly think my website would be mistaken for theirs”, “My name is Blassbooks; it doesn’t sound or look anything like Facebook.” Companies are trying ever harder to establish intellectual property. Apple recently patented the rectangle with rounded corners. Google is trying to trademark the word “Glass”. Twenty percent of the human genome has already been patented by various corporations. “Facebook assumes they own the word Book”, “Watch out, next they are going to trademark the face! Imagine paying a royalty every time you look in the mirror? It’s where we are quickly headed.” I have very little resources to fight Facebook, but I haven’t come so far to give up now after I have being called crazy by so many people for trying to change the world and solve a problem that affects the worldwide student community.
