this is the next bit from the book im reading. when the norman conquest came in 1066 William 1st divided hoddesdon between his followers some of the names of these manors still survive in street names today Lowefeld ,Westfeld, Middlefeld, Ditchfeld, Estfeld, Ryefeld, Lampitfeld, Southfeld, and Hailyfeld. This next bit not sure where it is but it says the mound which stands on the opposite side of Cock lane to Hoddesdonbury House is thought to be a Motte Castle and the burial place of Oddo whom Hoddesdon is named after it was excavated in 1901 and some charred remains were found along with bits of pottery dating from before the norman conquest. The bassingbourne family were the first family of note to live in Hoddesdon they built Bassingbourne Manor in about 1421 its name was later changed to Hogges Hall which you can see in the picture the shop fronts are a 20th century addition I remember this doorway its still there halfway up the high st I used to work in churches separates ladies clothes shop and I think its next door never thought about it at the time but the shop was really old with spooky stockroom so if you go into these shops you are entering Bassingbourne Manor.if anyone knows for sure where the burial mound is let us know there is a field [if its still there] across cock lane at the top that goes behind Barclays park maybe thats it
